Whether you’re painting that old patio chair or interior of your house it’s good to know exactly what you will need to begin and complete the project. Have the right tools is essential for a quality result. Sure, painting can seem easy right? Put some paint on a roller and slap it on wall. You want to start by deciding what it is you are painting. Walls, baseboards, crown molding, ceilings, cabinets, etc. Below is a basic list to help you gather the necessary tools to complete your new painting project.

Hand Masker

This tool is a must have for any project. It ensures a nice crisp line and protects from any paint drips. A hand masking kit will cost you up to $70.

Drop Cloths

Another must have item to protect both floors and furniture. A quality fabric drop cloth, depending on the size, can cost you anywhere from $16-$52. Although, cheaper disposable drop cloths are available for a fraction of the price.

   

Paint Sander

Chances are you’re going to have to sand in preparation for painting. We’ve found the Wagner Paint Eater to be a reliable and effective go to sander. This item will cost around $68.

Scraping Tool

Before you can sand you need to scrape off any loose, flaking, or bubbling paint. You can find these at any home improvement store and will cost less than $10.

Paint Brush

A quality paint brush will make all the difference. If you’re going to go cheap, don’t do it here. Be sure to select the right size and type for your project. You can find a cheap paint brush for just a few bucks where you’ll see the higher quality paint brushes going for more than $20.

Roller Frame

If you plan of rolling your paint on, you’ll need a sturdy roller frame. Sizes will vary from 4 inches up to 18 inches. Expect to pay $5-$30 for one of these.

Roller Cover 

Once you have your roller frame, you’ll need a cover for it. Roller covers come in several materials and thicknesses. Choosing the right roller cover is very important. These can cost anywhere from $5 to $20.  

Painters Tape

Frog Tape is the best but can run you up to $10 a roll. Scotch Blue tape is a good all-around painters tape and will cost around $4 a roll.

“When Should I Paint My House?”

Most often than not the answer is, right now. Whether you’re considering the interior or exterior of your home remember that you should be repainting every 4-8 years. Not only does paint fade but it begins to break down causing bubbling, peeling, and cracking which will cause a much larger hit to your wallet. If you begin noticing peeling or cracking on the exterior of your home address it immediately before it gets worse. In a severe case of exterior paint damage, the cost to repaint will increase by thousands of dollars. Why? Labor. The painting crew will have to scrap and sand the majority if not the entire exterior of your home. Depending on the size of the house and size of the crew working, sanding a home can take anywhere from 3-5 days. I can’t count how many times a customer has said to me “power washing will get the old paint off”. Oh okay. Power washing will remove some, but not all the damaged paint.

Can You Paint Your House Yourself?

Have you been considering repainting the interior or exterior of your home but haven’t hired anyone because of the cost? Are you thinking about repainting your home by yourself? Well, here’s some food for thought.

Hiring a painting company to repaint your home can be expensive. Mostly due to the price of paint. A gallon of cheap paint can cost you $20 where the highest quality of paint can run you over $100 per gallon. That adds up when you need 20 gallons to repaint your home. But please, don’t use cheap paint. You’ll regret the decision and end up paying far more having to repair and repaint. Then there’s the cost of other materials which will greatly vary.

It takes a professional painting crew of 3-5 painters 5-7 days to repaint the interior of a medium sized home. What does this mean to you? Provided that you’re not an experience painter, that means it may take you and another person months to completely repaint the interior of your home. That’s with setting quality workmanship aside. Don’t leave your house in disarray for months because your trying to save a little money. It will only lead to much unneeded stress.

Painting is much harder than people think. Believe me, I know. I started my painting business many years ago thinking hey, easy money. But once I got into it, I quickly realized that there’s more to a quality finish than simply rolling paint onto a wall. Getting the fine quality finish you want takes a lot of skill. It takes knowledge of the finer details. The type of paint to use on a certain surface. Wall paint doesn’t go on trim. Ceiling paint doesn’t go on cabinets. The use of primer, something many overlook. (Tip: never use a paint and primer in one in place of primer. In a year you will have major issues.) Properly masking and taping. Degreasing and cleaning surfaces before applying paint. Because if you don’t, you’ll end up having to do it again $$. Removing fixtures. Removing cabinets doors and spraying them. Never roll or brush cabinets, it’s just ugly. I could go on, but I think you may get the point.
